Speech by Guest Speaker
“Now, the beginning of the Induction Ceremony.”
“The membership of the Phoenix Chapter of the National Honor Society has been earned by the effective demonstration of the four qualities held in high esteem by the Society. I, and the chapter’s other officers -- Zachary Quaglia, Shivani Karanth, and Sydney Berry -- will review these qualities for the candidates.”
(Navya steps off the stage and Sydney takes the podium)
“First, scholarship.”
(Anya lights the first candle, walks off the stage, then hands lighter to Emmalyn)
“Scholarship means a commitment to learning both inside and outside the classroom. A student is willing to commit to reading, studying, and other methods of learning, knowing the lasting benefits of a cultivated mind. We should continue to learn even when formal education has ended, for education only ends with the end of life. Knowledge is one great element in life, which can only be acquired through diligence and effort. Learning furnishes the lamp by which we read the past and the light that illuminates the future. Candidates have the charge to continually expand their world through the opportunities inherent in scholarship.”
(Sydney turns the page, steps off the stage, and Shivani takes the podium.)
“Service”
(Emmalyn lights second candle, walks off stage, then hands the lighter to Kiran)
“Service can be described in various ways. In the routine of a day’s work, many opportunities arise to help others. Willingness to work for the benefit of those in need without monetary compensation or without expecting reciprocation is the quality we seek in our membership. Service is more than giving a moment of your time and energy; it’s recognizing that you’re doing it in hopes of creating a better tomorrow.”
(Shivani turns the page, steps off the stage, and Zachary takes the podium)
“Leadership.”
(Kiran lights the third candle, walks off the stage, then hands lighter to Yaw.)
“Leadership is the ability to recognize adversity and turn it into an opportunity. Leadership should exert a wholesome influence on everyone involved in any kind of team. In taking the initiative in class and school activities, the real leader strives to train, serve, and learn from others to attain the same objective. The price of leadership is sacrifice -- the willingness to yield one’s personal interests for the interests of others. A leader has self-confidence and will go forward when others hesitate. No matter what power and resources may exist in a country, they are ineffectual without the guidance of a wise leader. Leadership is always needed; thus, to lead is a substantive charge to each of our members.”
(Zachary turns the page, steps off stage, and Navya takes the podium.)
“Character.”
(Yaw lights the fourth candle, places the lighter on the table and walks off the stage.)
“Character is the force within each individual which distinguishes that person from others. It gives each of us our individuality. It is that without which no one can respect oneself, nor hope to attain the respect of others. It is the force of character that guides one through life, while at the same time growing steadily. Character is achieved and not received. It is the product of constant action, striving daily to make the right choices. The problem of character is the problem of self-control. By demonstrating such qualities as respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, care, and citizenship, we may hope to prove by example that we value character.”
“Will the chief marshal please stand in place to guide the candidates during this part of the ceremony? When I call your name, please walk across the stage from left to right to receive your chords and stand against the wall where Mansi is."
*Read Inductees' Names*
“The candidates will now repeat the NHS induction pledge.”
(Navya turns the page, steps to the side, and Zachary takes the podium.)
“Please repeat after me:”
“I pledge to maintain high scholastic standing, to hold as fundamental and worthy an untarnished character, to endeavor intelligently and courageously to be a leader, and to give of myself freely in service to others. In doing so I shall prove myself worthy of a place in the National Honor Society.”
(Zachary turns the page, steps off the stage, and Navya takes the podium.)
“Congratulations, new inductees! Parents, you can take a few photos if you wish.”
(Pause for photos.)
“Inductees, please take your seats.”
(Wait for all students to be seated.)
“Everyone, please welcome the newest members of the Phoenix Chapter of the National Honor Society!”
(Begin clapping.)
(Navya gives closing remarks and dismisses members)
Processional music plays. Adjournment of the audience to the post-induction ceremony.
